Bio |
Ronald Alfred Searle (1919-2015) , a native of England, moved to the area that is now Mississauga in the early 1950s and started his political career as Councillor for Ward 7 in 1963. He held this position on the Toronto Township, Town of Mississauga and City of Mississauga Councils. Searle became the City of Mississauga's second Mayor in 1977. During Searle's term as Mayor, Council approved an Official Plan to establish a downtown core for Mississauga and create more affordable housing. He also saw the need to push for more commercial development and guided Council to approve the construction of Burnhamthorpe bridge at the Credit River. Searle remained active in the community for decades, serving as President, Chairman and Director in a wide variety of organizations such as the Peel Regional Housing Authority, Central Counties Cancer Society, Peel Children's Aid Society and Mississauga Chapter of Canadian Red Cross. The Ron Searle Arena in Carmen Corbassan Community Centre and Ron Searle Park are named after the former Mayor. His late wife Mollie was honoured with the naming of Molly Avenue located off Burnhamthorpe Road. |
