History |
Photograph believed to have been taken during Arbor Day event at J.J. Plaus Park, in Port Credit in May of 1978. Mississauga first hosted an Arbor Day event on October 30th, 1974 "in an effort to encourage the private planting of trees in the denuded former farm fields that make up much of Mississauga's vast housing tracts". City officials participated by planting trees in the city centre. In later years the date was changed to May and invited school children and community groups to participate. Recreation and Parks provided trees and supplies to participants. References: Mayor Tree Surgeon. The Mississauga Times, Wednesday, October 16th, 1974 Arbor Day ceremony set May 5. The Mississauga Times, Wednesday, April 28th, 1976 35 schools mark Arbor Day with tree-plantings. The Mississauga Times, Wednesday, May 10, 1978 |
