History |
Photograph was taken at the Mississauga City Festival held in September 1977. The annual event ran to celebrate the forming of or 'the birth' of the City of Mississauga. It was held over three days from Friday, September 16th to Sunday, September 18th. Activities were held at Huron Park Recreation Centre and Port Credit Memorial Park. The festival evolved over the years and would later be known as the Rainbow Festival and later Fritterfest. Ron Searle has decades of experience in Municipal politics and served as Mayor for the City of Mississauga for one term. During this time he worked with council to approve an official plan to create a downtown core for Mississauga and make it separate from Toronto. Council was also looking into reports on how much money it would save if the City quit itself from Peel Region. They also initiated a plan to create more affordable housing. He also saw the need to push for more commercial development and guided Council to approve the construction of the Burnhamthorpe bridge at the Credit River.
