History |
The City of Mississauga was incorporated on January 1st, 1974 with the amalgamation of the Towns of Port Credit, Streetsville and the Town of Mississauga. The Town of Mississauga had been established from the former Toronto Township in 1968 when the historic communities of Clarkson, Cooksville, Dixie, Erindale, Lakeview, Lorne Park, Meadowvale Village, Malton, and Sheridan joined together. Shortly thereafter, discussions began about also incorporating with Port Credit and Streetsville. There was much local debate for and against this. In 1972 the Province of Ontario announced their decision that a Peel Regional government would represent Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga, and that Mississauga would include the Town of Mississauga, Port Credit and Streetsville. The first years of council saw the creation of The City of Mississauga's First Official Plan, setting the groundwork for the future development of the City. A number of waterfront properties were also acquired with the plans on developing public green space for residents. Both Burnhamthorpe Library Branch and Burnhamthorpe Community Centre officially opened while both Lorne Park and Lakeview Branch libraries received expansions.
