Hazel McCallion (1921-2023), businesswoman, athlete and politician, was mayor of Mississauga from 1978-2014. One of Canada's longest-serving mayors, McCallion led the city for 12 consecutive terms, retiring at age 93. Nicknamed "Hurricane Hazel" for her no-nonsense political style, she oversaw the development of Mississauga from a semi-rural bedroom community into the sixth-largest city in Canada. McCallion is considered a trailblazer for women in politics, a role model and an inspiration for many others. McCallion retired from municipal politics in 2014 but remained active in the community until her death. She was appointed chancellor of Sheridan College and special advisor to the principal of the University of Toronto-Mississauga. She worked closely with the Ontario Women's Hockey Association, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority Board and Revera Inc. Hazel McCallion Central Library and the Hurontario LRT, Hazel McCallion Line was named in her honour. |
