Harold Elgie Kennedy (1926-2009) served the community for 26 years as councillor for Ward 1 in the Toronto Township, Town of Mississauga and City of Mississauga councils. Harold grew up on a farm near Eglinton Avenue and Tomken Road and as a kid starred in a CBC radio show called the Kennedy Kids which featured the life of his widowed mother Evelyn and Harold's seven siblings. Harold Kennedy came from a family whose members were active in local politics. His father John served as councillor and clerk of Toronto Township as well as a trustee. Harold was also the nephew of Thomas L. Kennedy, former premier of Ontario as well as Douglas Kennedy who was an MPP for Mississauga South for 17 years. Kennedy served as member of the Credit Valley Conservation, Lions Club of Mississauga Credit Valley as well as founder and charter member of Mississauga Traffic Safety Council. He also served as a driving force behind the development of Lakefront Promenade Park. He is honoured with the naming of Harold E. Kennedy Memorial Park and a plaque at Brueckner Rhododendron Garden; both of which are located in Port Credit. Ref: 'The Toronto Star', December 8, 1994 page MS2. |
