Mary Helen Spence served as Ward 2 councillor for the City of Mississauga from 1974 until 1978. She was a community activist who led a strong reform-oriented campaign gaining the support of local ratepayers groups. Before her election, she helped organize the Council of South Mississauga Community Associations (CSMCA) and Save Our Trees and Streams Society (SOTAS). Spence was also a member of the Bexhill Road Residents Association which worked to save Rattray Marsh. She supported and worked towards controlled development and advocated for the continued preservation of the environment. During her four years in office, she helped with the acquisition of parkland along the waterfront, helped the council establish stricter development controls and invited local ratepayers groups in the shaping of the Lakeshore Community Study. After her time in council, Spence worked as the Director of Multiculturalism at the Harbourfront in Toronto.
