History |
Punch paper embroidery was a type of 'Victorian Fancywork' popular from the 1880s to 1910. It was popular with all ages as it was easy to stitch on the pre-printed punch paper without the need of a embroidery hoop. This type of craft work was often referred to as 'mail-order mottos' or 'door text' as they usually hung over a door. There were countless sayings with most being Biblical. Each piece was sold in a kit that contained the punched stamped paper, thread and cross bar frame. This example is a memorial sampler which was also very popular during the Victorian Era. Memorial samplers were traditionally made to memorialize the death of a family member. The first recorded memorial sampler was made in 1791. They were popular from the 1800-1900s with varying degrees of intricacy and design. References: Perforated Paper Needlework.
