Description |
Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) poem entitled 'Kunshi Tokufu' by artist Teika Kagose. The poem is in a wooden frame covered with glass. The matting is gold material with a gold-coloured insert. The calligraphy is black on white with a circular red artist stamp. The black frame has two moveable feet. The back has a green backing card held in place with orange plastic hinges. A paper-typed label reads " Artist: Teika Kagose, Meaning: 'Kunshi Tokufu', 'Just like grasses stream after wind, people follow after great leaders by their wind of virtue." |

History |
This gift was presented by Naoki Ito to the former mayor, Hazel McCallion in November 1997. A small delegation to Mississauga from Kariya, Japan came for the opening of the Living Arts Centre. A gift exchange was held in the Mayor's Office where she was given this traditional calligraphy (shodo) as well as a Japanese doll. Mississauga and Kariya, Japan are sister cities and have been twinned since July 7th, 1981. Teika Kagose is the artist who made the calligraphy. Teika visited Mississauga on a Kariya citizen delegation in 2016. While in Mississauga she gave a live calligraphy performance. "SHODO is a Japanese word which is often translated and described as 'the way of artistic handwriting or beautiful writing'. Another meaning is "the art of traditional Japanese calligraphy".
