History |
During the late Victorian era it was customary for a widow to wear a bonnet with a dark veil for a year. During the first three months the veil would be worn in front of her face. The purple colour on the bonnet indicates that the wearer was in the last or third stage of mourning. This stage lasted for three to six months and allowed women to wear clothing and accessories that contained more elaborate fabrics and jewellery with the easing back into colour with grey, purple and lavender. Ref: https://www.fashion-era.com/mourning_fashion.htm The bonnet belonged to Herridge family who operated Herridge's Market on Southdown Road in Clarkson. The bonnet was worn either by Mr. Herridge's mother or his grandmother, Mrs. Coluson. |
