Description |
Black silk cape. Black lace is sewn along lapels and across shoulders and upper back. The quilted lining of the batting is backed by treated burlap. Black ostrich feathers trim the hem, front and around the collar; the collar also has lace. The overall shape is that of a diamond, cut to a point at the centre back and centre front. One inside pocket on each side, five hooks and eye closures at the neck. |

Cape worn by donor's great-grandmother, Mrs. Matthews, to a ball given in honour of a Royal visit in 1901. Specially made for Mrs. Matthews by The Eaton Co. Limited Toronto, Canada 1897. May have been a ball given for the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary) who toured Canada coast-to-coast as part of an Empire-wide tour in 1901. |
