Description |
A handmade white and pink toddler dress made out of cotton and corduroy. The pink is crocheted trimmings sewn into the dress. The neckline and sleeves have a 1.5 cm wide band of pink crochet work. The hem is a 3 cm wide band of pink crochet work. The bodice and skirt are connected with a 7 cm wide band of pink crochet work, found around the waistline. Around the bottom of the shirt, there are four inlaid pyramid-shaped pieces of soft crochet work with a similar smaller piece on the back sleeve and at the front neckline. This dress has a round neckline, elbow-length sleeves and four vertical tucks from each shoulder to the waistband. The crochet work on the waistband includes a flower pattern and the word 'Dora' at the centre front. The back neckline closes with two 7 mm round mother-of-pearl buttons. There is an 8 cm gap at the back where the skirt has come loose from the waistband. |

History |
According to oral tradition, Mary Harris made this dress for her granddaughter Dora. Dora Sayers (1915-2004) was the second child of Annie and Beverley Sayers of Clarkson. When Dora's father went overseas to prepare for war she, along with her mother and her older brother, Geoffrey, lived for a few years at Benares House. |
