History |
The backstamp on this water jug or pitcher was first introduced by Royal Doulton in 1901. The new Doulton mark, featured a lion, crown and 'intersecting D motif'. The new mark introduced the 'Royal' word to symbolize the Royal Warrant it received from King Edward VII. Doulton & Company was established in 1815 as a partnership in Lambeth, London. It specialized in bottles and sewer pipes but expanded to develop tableware and commemorative figurines after 1853. Doulton & Company moved to Nile Street, Burslem in 'The Potteries' in 1882 and received a Royal Warrant in 1901 making them Royal Doulton & Company. The company is still in operation today under Doulton Home. References: Royal Doulton backstamps.
