Description |
A Chinese black silk jacket with a centre opening and multi-coloured applique embroidery on front and back as well as cuffs. The body and sleeves are cut from one piece of fabric and are edged with coral coloured binding include the side-seam slits. The binding follows the contour of the neckline which has a mandarin collar. The jacket fastens using silk loops and knots. Two of the fasteners are composed of appliqued pink hearts to hold the loops and knots. The embroidery includes birds, flowers, vines and seeds. The lining is a pale turquoise soft-woven silk. The edge of the sleeves also have embroidery. Most of the jacket seems to be hand sewn. |

History |
This jacket was though to have been a gift from Percy Sutherland (1878-1943), a cousin and close friend of Mary Harris and her daughters, Annie and Naomi. Percy worked in Hong Kong from 1906 to 1924. |
