Description |
A hand sewn teddy bear made of a cotton fabric with a plush finish. The plush finish is nearly all worn away. The body has a seam front and back, straight down the centre. The ends of the arms are covered in a black knit fabric. Arms, head, legs and ears were all made separately then sewn to the body. There are two glass beads for eyes and small black patches for nose and mouth. Stuffing material is unknown. He is wearing a blue jacket with a white button and blue and white striped pants. The bear is wearing a royal blue cotton jacket, 7.5 cm long with a collar fastened with white 1.0 cm diameter buttons. The jacket has set in sleeves and is hand sewn. Bear also as a pair of light blue and white striped pants 11.75 cm long with waistband casing and tie which are also hand sewn. |

History |
This bear was originally given to Geoffrey Harris Sayers (1907-1997) for his first Christmas in 1907. It was used by both Dora and Barbara Sayers, his sisters. The bear's clothing are a later addition and were sewn by Annie Louise Sayers (1882-1986). She made the clothing when she presented Teddy back to Geoffrey for his 50th birthday. Benares Historic House museum has hosted numerous Teddy's Bear picnic event in honour of the beloved bear. |
