History |
This brand of chocolates was made by Neilson Diary which began with William Neilson back in 1893. The company started in Southern Ontario and began producing ice cream. It would branch out into chocolate making so that the factory remained in operation during the winter months when ice cream was in less demand. Soon William Neilson Ltd would become the largest manufacturer of chocolates in Canada earning an international reputation. The firm would be acquired by George Weston in 1947 and would incorporate all its dairies under the Neilson brand name. Today Neilson is operated under the Saputo family of products. Advertisers began promoting chocolate as gifts for various holidays and occasions such as Mother's Day or Easter during the early part of the 20th Century.
