History |
These sake cups may be Arita (also known as Imari) which is characterized by its translucent surface and striking designs. Arita was exported extensively to Europe starting in the 17th century. This style of sake cup is known as 'ochoko' which directly translates to 'cylindrical cup'. Sake is a traditional Japanese, alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice. Ref:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arita_ware & www.sakefanworld.info>sake-column>ochoko These artifacts may have belonged to Lucy (1844-1925) and Elizabeth (Bessie) Harris (1835-1910) the daughters of Elizabeth and Captain James Harris of Benares. Both lived at Benares until an inheritance in 1888 allowed them to move to Toronto to St. George Street. Lucy loved antiques and helped organize a club for women interested in china and was a member of the Toronto Horticultural Society. After Lucy passed away in 1925, most of their belongings were transfered to Benares. |
