Description |
A framed, untitled watercolour painting by Fanny Sutherland.The subject is maple leaves on a branch. The painting is of a branch with maple leaves, that are painted in fall colours - green, brown, red, and yellow. The background is plain beige. It is signed "Fanny Sutherland" in the bottom left-hand corner. The frame is carved wood painted gold and black and is wide and tall with a glass front. The inner border has a simple leaf pattern carved in relief while the outer border is a scale pattern carved in the same relief style. The painting is backed with brown paper. There are 2 eye screws with a wire for hanging. |

History |
Painting was created by artist Fanny Sutherland who gave the piece to her niece Maude Sutherland. Maude was an amateur artist who enjoyed painting floral scenes on ceramics. The Sutherland family is related to the Harrises of Benares through Mary Magrath Harris. Fanny Sutherland, Mary's aunt, painted a portrait of Lucy Harris, which hangs in the drawing room of Benares A smaller painting of a boy fishing by John Newton Sutherland hangs in the upstairs hallway. The Sutherlands are credited with introducing strawberry and raspberry cultivation to Clarkson. |
