History |
Souvenir goblet was acquired by the Carr family of Cooksville in 1903. Robert and Alice Carr had a home located at 55 Burnhamthorpe Road West and lived there from 1928 until 1963. Known as Ruby Flash glass or Ruby Stained glass, red souvenir cups such as this one were popular in North America from the late 1890s up until the 1920s. The bright red colour was made by coating the glass in a chemical solution that included copper sulphide. Found on mugs, cups, and dinnerwear, these items could also be 'flashed' with touches of gold. Ruby Flash glass was sold in tourist areas, such as Niagara Falls as well as train stations and fairs and was commonly personalized, etched with names and dates.
