Description |
A black military or bicorn hat manufactured by Matthew & Co. Appears to be made of beaver felt with a possible horsehair plume on one side. A black, three-centimetre wide ribbon trim and a flat black grosgrain bow are found underneath the plume. Inside the hat is lined in gold, pleated silk. The manufacturer logo is found printed in gold inside the crown and reads Extra Quality, Naval Outfitters, Matthew & Co., Portsea, Portsmouth; Pliable Cork. Handwritten in ink, on the leather hatband are the initials: R.K.A. Size tag inside reads '6 7/8'. |

History |
The hat once belonged to Major General Harry Macintyre Cawthra-Elliot (1867-1949), who took the Cawthra name after marrying Grace M.K. Cawthra. It is unknown who the initials R.K.A. is in reference to. Harry was born in Bangalore, India and was the son of Major General Riversdale Elliott and Carmina Macintyre. Aside from serving as Commissioner, Harry served as a justice of the peace and later retired in 1925. Active in the community he served as Honorary President of the Port Credit Branch of the Canadian Legion, a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the Canadian Military Institute. The house and property of Grace and Harry are located at present-day 1507 Cawthra Road and are protected under the Ontario Heritage Act.
