History |
Shawl belonged to a member of the Herridge family of Clarkson. It belonged to the donor's mother or grandmother. The donor owned and operated Herridge market which is located on Southdown Road. Mourning attire was the perfect way to show the wealth and respectability of a woman, and the lower classes would try to emulate this wealth by dyeing their clothes black or recycling funeral attire.
