History |
The cast iron wood stove was installed each fall for the winter months, dismantled in the spring, and stored in the barn. The house was also equipped with a coal-burning furnace, which supplied hot water to the radiators located throughout the first and second floors. Coal was scarce during World War I, so the use of wood was prevalent during this time since it was readily available and it was patriotic to support Canada's war effort. Dora Sayers vividly recalls her Uncle Egerton Sayers's shiny black military boots on the runner of the stove before his return to the war front where he was killed in France in June 1918.
