History |
Bonnet possibly belonged to Mary Harris or one of her sister-in-laws. "Most bonnets have a stiffened front with rows of rushing and frills across the crown. The back is gathered and often has an added bow. The long frill at the lower edge is known as a bavolet and is designed to keep the sun off the wearer's neck. Generally white bonnets were used for Sunday Best; although black bonnets of satin were also worn by cottagers on Sunday and were carefully handled."
