Description |
Short brown seal fur tippet/stole with wide collar formed from one piece of skin. Lined with brown quilting, it has 4 hooks and eyes down the front opening (alternating hook, eye, hook). Black tape tag for hanging up. Black tape loop and fur-covered button on the underside of the collar. Forms a collar when clasps are closed. |

History |
According to the donor, Rosamond Vanderburgh, this stole was made out of seal fur and dates to the 1870s. Vanderburgh worked as a cultural anthropologist as well as teaching Anthropology at the University of Toronto in Mississauga. Vanderburgh also worked as Assistant Curator for the Department of Ethnology at the Royal Ontario Museum. A stole like this may be referred to as a tippet - a wrap usually made out of fur. |
