History |
According to the donor, this wedge was used by Luke Marchment of Churchville, Ontario. Splitting wedges would be used by many on farms to help split logs and chop wood used for construction or gathering firewood for heating and cooking. The village of Churchville was established in 1815 and was located in the northern part of Toronto Township. Located north of Meadowvale, it grew as a mill town located along the Credit River and was served by both the Credit Valley Railway (ca. 1870s) and the Toronto Suburban Railway (1917-1931). In 1974 Churchville became part of the City of Brampton. Reference: http://spacing.ca/toronto/2010/02/05/gtas-lost-villages-churchville/ |
