History |
The origins of the necktie occurred in the 17th century when King Louis XIII of France hired mercenaries (professional soldiers to help fight the 30 Year War). He noticed they had a piece of cloth around their neck around their uniform; they were used to tie the top of their jackets. King Louis liked the look and would later make ties mandatory accessories at his court. These first neckties were named La Cravate, in honour of the Croatian soldiers. Bow ties were worn by men for more formal occasions and so a necktie such as this was the choice of everyday wear for a gentleman. Black neckties were also worn by widowed husbands who were in mourning. Alexander T. Reid founded the A.T. Reid Co. Ltd in 1901. It manufactured neckwear during the first half of the 20th century and was the largest firm of its kind during the 1920s. References: The Evolution of the Necktie. Hendrik.
