History |
This hat was made as part of a souvenir line to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the City of Mississauga; it was made by Avon Sportswear. In 1984 the City of Mississauga celebrated the 10th anniversary of its incorporation with the slogan: "Proud to be 10". A special 'Proud to Be 10' song was recorded with what we believe to have been the help of the local radio station CJMR 1190. CJMR also collaborated with the City of Mississauga and hosted broadcasts of the 'Recreation Report' to advise residents of special events, community activities, recreation programs and festivals. The city encouraged existing community festivals to incorporate the 10th Anniversary celebrations into their events throughout the year, and Council established a one-time grant of $10,000 to support these efforts. A 'Committee of Festivals' was established to bring together representatives from all of Mississauga's major festivals to share resources and expertise. Together they decided to submit a joint application for a stage to be used at various festival venue sites and maintained by City Parks staff. Representatives from each festival agreed to promote the City's 10th Anniversary at each of their events, such as making announcements from this stage. This stage remained in operation at community events until 2012. Avon Sportswear Limited operated in Toronto from ca. 1970 to ca. 2012. Owned by Albert Sliwin, Avon was the "manufacturer of promotional jackets and caps. Prime supplier to corporate, sporting goods and ad specialties companies throughout Canada." The company also was active in the community and ran a Basketball Club and donated many items to fundraising activities such as the Rotary TV Auction. The company is no longer in operation and is believed to have been sold to Shain Sportswear Limited ca. 2012. References: 'The City of Mississauga, 1974 to 2014: 40 years, 40 sagas.
