History |
During the 1950s this style of jar contained a meat paste that was similar to pate. Unsure which brand of paste this jar came from. Preliminary research in old Toronto Star newspapers had found that Shippmam's Fish and Meat Paste jars were sold at the Eaton's Daily Store Groceteria during the 1920s for 25 cents a jar. Crosse and Blackwell Meat Paste or Fish Paste brands were also advertised for sale at Eaton's for 23 cents. This item was found in Archeological digs done around the Benares Historic House in Clarkson, Mississauga, Ontario. Much of the archeological collection was discovered in 'garbage pits' used by the family to discard broken and/or unwanted objects. Today, Benares Historic House is a historic house owned by the Museums of Mississauga. Reference: The Toronto Daily Star June 23, 1923. Page 23 and The Toronto Daily Star November 22, 1926. |
