History |
This quilt is a log cabin variation known as 'Windmill Blades', "Pineapple" or 'Maltese Cross'. It was donated by Margaret Lawrence who was active on the board for the Toronto Township Historical Foundation; responsible for overseeing and running the Bradley House Museum. She helped build the collection of the museum worked to save the Anchorage to be restored onto the Bradley site. Lisa J. Allen, Quilting-in-America.com creator wrote, "Among the most popular traditional patchwork motifs, the Log Cabin block is one of the earliest blocks on record. Surprisingly easy to construct with a wide range of visually sophisticated pattern layouts, the block has endured the test of time because of its universal appeal. Incorporating unlimited variation, the block intrigues beginners and expert quilters alike." Windmill Blades is one of the most challenging variations of the log cabin pattern that requires piecing the strips of fabric on a diagonal to the central hearth square instead of perpendicular.
