Description |
Wooden toy piano painted to resemble mahogany wood. The piano has 14 keys giving almost two octaves. The piano's keys are wooden blocks painted white with the black keys painted over the white. The back of the piano is closed except for a section (35 x 10.3cm) which shows the mechanism for producing sound (14 flat metal plates varying in size). The keys move a hammer which strikes the plate from below. There are no distinguishing marks except for the number 700 marked in pencil at the back. |

History |
The piano belonged to Dora Sayers and was passed on to Barbara, her sister. Dora Sayers Caro (1915-2004) was born in Clarkson in 1915, to Beverly and Annie Sayers (née Harris). Dora lived close to Benares in several homes, including "Skidoo", "The Pines", and later "The Log Bungalow". During World War I, Dora lived in Benares with her mother and brother while her father was overseas as an officer. |
