History |
This is an example of a pieced or patchwork quilt. The hexagon quilt top was usually made by sewing the material around shaped pieces of paper that were sewn together and then the paper was removed. Fabrics were often traded with friends or remnants were bought to provide variety in the pattern. Also known as a mosaic or honeycomb pattern. This quilt has one hexagon with material celebrating Queen Victoria's Jubilee, 1887. Other materials date to the 1860s and include madder browns, cheddar and minty green. |
