History |
Souvenirs, such as this pot, acted as tangible proof of travel and embodied the tourist experience. This green pot was bought as a souvenir by Annie Harris (1882-1986) on her six-month educational trip to Belgium, Holland, France, England, and Italy. She travelled there in 1903 where she celebrated her twenty-first birthday. As part of a 'Grand Tour', Annie was accompanied by Dora Labatt (family member of the Labatt Brewing Company), Edna Leonard, and Canadian artist Caroline Farncomb (1859-1951). Farncomb acted as their chaperone throughout the trip. The Roman-like pottery was probably bought around Pompeii where the group visited ruins on a day trip. The Museums hold postcards and photographs from her trip to Europe. |
