History |
The Mississauga Rainbow Festival was a city-wide festival to celebrate the City of Mississauga. It started in 1974 as the City Festival and was in later years known as Fritterfest. The name 'rainbow' was chosen to celebrate the many cultures and ethnicities that called Mississauga home. 1986 was the last year the festival was held as the City focused on larger celebrations for the Civic Centre opened in 1987. The four-day festival attracted over 40,000 people and featured a wide variety of events and activities including bed and bathtub races, police tug of war, antique cars, a parade, children's events and a Canada Day firework display. The main activity centred on the Festival Village located on Lakeshore Road near the Credit River. References: Mississauga could stop festival funds.
