History |
Traditionally marshmallows were only consumed for a short period during the year. Before prohibition, they were commonly found served at picnics and beach parties. Campfire Company of Milwaukee started making and selling marshmallows to popularize the food item for the use of cooking. They used special advertising and marketing techniques to open up the market which included promoting a recipe booklet filled with various recipes that included marshmallows. They also made the marshmallow round and sold it in large packages. Campfire Company was owned by the Imperial Candy Co and Redel Candy Corporation of Milwaukee Wisconsin which also operated out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company was founded in 1917.
