| History | Dr. Martin L. Dobkin moved to the Town of Mississauga in the late 1960s and joined a family medicine practice in Cooksville. In 1970 he started his own Family Medicine office in Applewood Acres and he was appointed Coroner for Peel County. In 1974, at the age of 31 and as a political novice running on a 'reform platform', Dobkin won the City of Mississauga's first Mayoralty election. He beat veteran politician Charles 'Chic' Murray who had been the Mayor of the Town of Mississauga. During his three year term as Mayor, Dobkin wrote a column for the Mississauga News and aired a cable television show on local Cable 10. The City of Mississauga's First Official Plan was created, setting the groundwork for the future development of the City. As well, a number of waterfront properties were acquired to provide public green space and the Burnhamthorpe, Lorne Park, and Lakeview Libraries were opened, as was Burnhamthorpe Community Centres. Dobkin lost the 1976 mayoralty race to Ron Searle and returned to his medical practice. Dr. Martin L. Dobkin Park located on Fairview Road was named in his honour. Dr. Dobkin continues to live in Mississauga and still practices medicine part-time. Reference: Museums of Mississauga Exhibition - The City of Mississauga, 1974 to 2014: 40 years, 40 sagas |
