A black and white photograph mounted on foam board. Photograph of William Hare speaking during the opening of the Huron Park Recreation Centre. Mr. Hare is wearing a plaid suit jacket with dark slacks; a 'Township of Toronto' patch is located on the left side of Mr. Hare's jacket. History |
Huron Park Recreation or Community Centre officially opened to the public on September 21st, 1967. It was the first of its kind in North America and was built by Architects Abram & Ingleson. The complex combined cultural, physical and recreational facilities on a 50-acre park site. Three buildings made up the centre which included an arena, auditorium and athletic wing. It was the first to be opened by Toronto Township and included space for an arena, theatres, indoor pool, meeting rooms, courts and fields for various sports activities. Originally located at address 2460 Stavebank Road the Centre was renovated in 2004 and is presently located at 830 Paisley Boulevard. William Hare served as the director for recreation for the Township of Toronto and was later appointed Commissioner of Parks and Recreation in 1951. He oversaw the development of Huron Park, the Township's first recreation centre.
