History |
Photograph captures members of Peel County Council. This was the first year Mississauga was incorporated into a town. It was also the first time that Hazel McCallion served in municipal politics. She was elected deputy-reeve for the Town of Streetsville. Peel County was formed in 1851 and encompassed the Townships of Albion, Caledon, Chinguacousy, Toronto and Toronto Gore. These townships would later evolve to form the municipalities of Mississauga, Brampton and the Village of Caledon which are now part of the Region of Peel, established in 1973. Prior to 1851, portions of Peel were governed under the administrations of York County (Toronto). Gordon Campbell was a local photographer from Brampton who was active during the 1950s and 1960s. He photographed a number of official council photographs for the County of Peel. Reference: A History of Peel County To Marks Its Centenary, 1967. Corporation of the County of Peel |
