History |
Arthur Harris and Mary Magrath were engaged in 1880 and would be married on September 29th, 1881. Both the Harris family of Clarkson and the Magrath family of Erindale were long-time members of St. Peters Anglican Church and it was at church that Mary and Arthur would have become acquainted with one another. The Harris and Magrath families had been friends for fifty-five years before the couple married. The ties between the Magrath family and Arthur Harris had grown closer as he matured and he is known to have visited the Magrath home, Erindale, and William Magrath, Mary's father, regularly. Both families were happy that the couple decided to marry and both agreed and supported the marriage. Mary was twenty-two at the time of the marriage while Arthur was thirty-eight. Arthur had taken over the management of the farm, at Benares, in the early 1870s and stood to inherit the home and property. Arthur and Mary would go on to celebrate 50 years as husband and wife.
