A black and white photograph of Burnhamthorpe Road West taken from Hurontario Street in May 1972. On the right edge of the photo are two buildings. History |
Photograph shows the early development of the Mississauga City Centre area at the intersection of Highway 10 (Hurontario) and Burnhamthorpe Road. The two buildings shown are the UCO/Desjardin and McLaughlin buildings. The UCO or Desjardins building located at 151 City Centre Drive was a 9-storey office building built in 1972. It was later demolished to house the Exchange Condo during the 2020s. The McLaughlin building, located in the foreground, is located at 77 City Centre Drive and was also built by S.B. McLaughlin. It was later owned by Mascan and serves presently as an office building. It was the first building constructed in the City Centre area. It opened in 1969 and housed employees from S.B. Associates Ltd. Its original address was noted as 77 Burnhamthorpe Road before it changed to City Centre Drive. The donor who captured this image worked for both the Toronto Township and Town of Mississauga engineering departments and was responsible for designing the crest for the Town. He also spent time photographing different parts of the town. References: McLaughlin's New Deal. Town Offered $1,275,000 Municipal Complex. The South Peel Weekly. Wednesday, July 2, 1969 J.
