History |
Commemorative book was published by the Mississauga Jaycees on behalf of Canadian Speciality Publishing in 1974. The book explains Mississauga's growth, but it also gives context to surrounding regions and the land Mississauga occupied before its amalgamation into a city. The Mississauga Jaycees formed in 1949, in Port Credit through the Junior Chamber of Commerce and were leaders in developing and supporting various projects. In 1963 the charter changed to create the Mississauga Junior Chamber. In the beginning male members, between the ages of 18 and 40 were part of the organization until a constitutional change occurred to include female 'Jaycettes' during the 1970s. During its early history, the "objects of this non-political and non-denominational club would be to aid young businessmen in their chosen professions, to promote good fellowship, to encourage interest in civic problems and provide a channel for participation in community and charitable projects" (The Port Credit Weekly). Jaycees were involved in establishing the Mississauga Santa Clause Parade (1960s) and heading fundraising drives for Port Credit Arena and the Mississauga Hospital. Mississauga Jaycees now operates as Junior Chamber International. References: Jaycee Group Meets Here. The Port Credit Weekly. Thursday, March 10th, 1949 Through the years with the Jaycees.
