History |
Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was the queen of England from 1837 until her death. Succeeded by King Edward VII, her son, she figured prominently in Britain and its colonies and has been considered the first media monarch. Canada, a colony until 1867, maintained British imperial roots into the beginning of the twentieth century. The Harris family considered themselves British subjects as they served under Britain's kings and queens as part of their military tradition. Lithographs, photos, books, and articles featuring Queen Victoria are prominent items in the Benares collection illustrating the queen's importance to the family. The Illustrated London News has a long history and was founded by Herbert Ingram in 1842. It was the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper that presented a picture of British life and events as well as information about events going on across the world. The magazine was published continually until 2003. It marked a revolution in newspaper reporting and journalism as it was the first newspaper to use War correspondents and illustrators. It also was the first to publish colour supplements. References: 'Queen Victoria: First media monarch', by John Plunkett. Oxford University Press, 2003. 'Queen Victoria' by author Walter L. Arnstein.
