History |
Most likely belonged to Naomi Harris of Benares. The Girls' Friendly Society is an international, not-for-profit organization founded in England in 1875 by Mary Elizabeth Townsend. The Society, the first organization for women in the Church in England, was created to help support unmarried girls through friendship and recreation in accordance to Christian fellowship and service. According to a 1896 article of Toronto Star there was a Canadian branch of the Girls Friendly Society in which Mrs. S.G. Woods was named as Dominion President. In 1901 there were five known branches in the Toronto area (?): Holy Trinity, St Simons, Church of Redeemer, St George and St Barnabas. Ref: www.gfsusa.org |
