History |
The original St. Peter's Church was built in 1826 and demolished in 1887 to make way for a stone structure. The tower and spire of the present church were added in 1910 and the Church Hall in 1936. The stonework was restored and the spire covered in copper in 1949. 1958-1959 a new Sunday School was completed that was dedicated on January 20th, 1960. St. Peter's Church had many ties with the Harris family of Benares House. The Harrises were strong supporters of the Church with Captain James B. Harris (1797-1884) acting as a church warden from 1838-1860. Arthur B. Harris (1843-1932) was on the building committee in 1886 and also served as a church warden and had agreed to assume some of the debt over and above the amount contributed to the Building Fund of the new structure. Many members of the family were married at the Church including Mary Magrath and Arthur Harris, Annie Harris and Beverly Sayers and Kathleen Colloton and Geoffrey Sayers. As well, many of the Harris' are buried in the graveyard there. Ref: Thompson Adamson "175 Years of History" (Erindale: St Peter's Anglican Church, 2000). |
