History |
The Cooksville Creek Study was presented to Council in 1971 by W.J. Anderson, Town Engineer. It was a result of a request to help the Town establish policies to ensure proper control of its watercourse. The study looked at lands along Cooksville Creek from the Queen Elizabeth Way to the Canadian Pacific Railway and provided suggestions for improved channelization and concrete channels for the area. Cooksville Creek starts from Bristol Road West and Hurontario Street and flows south to Lake Ontario at R.K McMillan Park in Lakeview. According to the Canadian Geographical Names Database (CGNDB), the creek was given the official name in 1962 however references to 'Cooksville Creek' can be found in sources as early as 1913. Cooksville Creek measures 16 km in length and is located entirely in Mississauga. It drains into Lake Ontario. Originally flowed within agricultural lands and through woodlots, it is now an urban watershed found within residential, industrial and commercial lands. During the early 1800s, Daniel Harris damned the Cooksville Creek and established a sawmill. Harris worked as a carpenter, millwright and shipbuilder. References: Rom to Strachan to Owen.
