History |
Queen Victoria (1819- 1901) was the queen of England from 1837 until her death. Succeeded by King Edward VII, her son, she figured prominently in Britain and its colonies and has been considered the first media monarch. Canada, a colony until 1867, maintained British imperial roots into the beginning of the twentieth century. The Harris family considered themselves British subjects as they served under Britain's kings and queens as part of their military tradition. Lithographs, photos, books, and articles featuring Queen Victoria are prominent items in the Benares collection illustrating the queen's importance to the family. The Toronto World was a daily newspaper published between 1820 and 1921. It later published the Toronto Sunday World (1821) which was a weekly supplement to its daily newspaper and later The Sunday World (1891). The newspaper was popular amongst its readers, especially by the city's working class. It featured stories from around the world including those covering protests and conflicts.
