A beige letter folded in half to make four pages. The letter is to Annie Radenhurst Grant from her brother William Radenhurst. The letter is written in black ink and reads: "Dear Nan, enclosed I send you a document which I expected before leaving home which may or may not be of some value to you or your children according as to whether our estate turns out worthless or otherwise. This the best I can do to pay poor Alick $200.00 he lent me about two years ago when I was very hard pushed. I am quite alive to the fact that I have made a very bad return for all the many acts of kindness Alick has done for me and I sincerely hope Jack will be guided by his good advice more then I have been, for had I been ruled by him instead of my own reckless folly and absurdity, I would not now be in the he position I am or obliged to take the step I do. One thing I ask you and that is keep the knowledge of my ? and the attending circumstances as much as possible from our mother. By the time you receive this I will be far away but I have just discovered a matter that renders the step necessary sooner that I had intended. There is no use in a cry since uttering unavailing regrets and I therefore will express none but I do feel it tough that I could not have seen you all to say GOODBYE for it will I have no doubt be a long one. if I have had any good points try and consider them mountains another there by and cast a shadow on their powerful opponents ? absurdities to say are painfully in the ascendant (?). Goodbye Nannie, the best thing you can do is to forget that you ever had a brother, Willie" |
History |
William Napier Radenhurst was the son of John Radenhurst and Mary Rideout and sister to Annie Radenhurst Grant. William seems to have had some financial issues that required him to leave Toronto and sign over his estate to Annie's husband , Alex, in lieu of a $200.00 loan (1864). Another sister of William's was Ellen who married William George Draper. They were the parents of Kathrine Ellen Draper Sayers and grandparents to Beverly Sayers who is connected to Benares House through marriage to Annie Harris (1906). |
