History |
Letter was given to Erindale resident Roy Ivor from Bill Davis, Ontario's Minister of Education. Roy was at the time being treated at the Mississauga Hospital after his home and part of his bird sanctuary burned down on December 29th, 1970. According to newspaper accounts, Mr. Ivor woke in the night and tried to douse the flames but was not able to put the fire out. About 70 birds died in the fire. In the year following the fire, donations of $25,000 were raised to build a new sanctuary to be run by Bernice Inman. Roy was 91 when his home burned down. He later lived in a trailer that was located over the burned foundation of his home. References: A tragic blow. Mississauga Times Wednesday January 6 1971 Bird Bank. Kiwanis and Naturalist.
