History |
Special program was produced by organizers from the Streetsville Founders' Bread and Honey Festival Inc. As part of the festival, they included activities which commemorated the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977. Lieutenant-Governor Pauline McGibbon was present at the events. Streetsville's Bread and Honey Festival originated in 1973 to celebrate the founding of the village in 1858. The theme of bread and honey was chosen to reflect the village's milling and apiary history. The success of the first venture led to the Festival becoming an annual event on the first Saturday of every June. In 1974, the Festival was incorporated with Mayor McCallion's husband, Sam McCallion, as Charter President. In later years organizations such as the Kinsmen Club, Lions Club and Rotary Club joined in with festival operations to run it as part of a joint community project and began to grow in size and activity. It became a weekend event in 1990 and is held at Streetsville Memorial Park beside the Credit River. The festival is listed in Ontario's top 100 Festivals and Events each year.
