An oil painting portrait of Elizabeth (Bessie) Harris. Bessie is wearing a blue jacket and skirt with a white high-neck collar and is seated by a window holding a teacup on her lap. The window curtains seem to be blowing inward. The frame is wide and the relief has decorative leaves, scrolls and shell motifs of plaster at each corner. It is painted gold and edged with a fine repeating wave-like pattern. |

History |
Item was painted by family friend Caroline Farncomb during the late 19th Century. Bessie lived at Benares in Clarkson until 1888 when she moved to Toronto with her sister Lucy. They lived at homes on Huron Street and St. George Street. They were known as the Harris Aunts and enjoyed collecting antiques, ceramics and gardening. After Lucy died in 1925, most of their belongings came to Benares. |
